Samarjit Roy is a distinguished and versatile vocalist from Bangladesh, acclaimed for his expertise as a composer, music director, and music teacher. He is equally well-known as a music artist in India.
An enlisted artist with Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and Shilpakala Academy, Samarjit is also recognized as a composer and music director for Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar.
Samarjit has had the privilege of training under legendary vocalists, including Padma Shri Pt. Madhup Mudgal and Padma Bhushan Pt. Ajoy Chakravarty. His musical journey has been enriched by the guidance of eminent Gurus such as Pt. Nirmolendu Chowdhury (Bangladesh), Pt. Sarada Prasanna Acharya, Late Smt. Padma Devi, Shri Sandeep Shrivastava, and Shri Sudhanshu Bahuguna. He has also attended workshops conducted by esteemed mentors like Pt. Yashwantbua Joshi, Pt. Dinkar Kaikini, and Smt. Purnima Choudhury at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi.
Awarded the prestigious ICCR scholarship by the Government of India, Samarjit pursued higher studies in Classical Music. He topped the final examination of “Sangeet Visharad” from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai, and received several accolades, including the Pandit D.V. Paluskar Award, Hari Om Trust Award, Vasudev Chintaman Waghmare Award, and Sangeeta Vasant Bendre Award. Additionally, he holds a Sangeet Visharad degree in classical vocal music and tabla from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.
Rooted in classical music, Samarjit is equally proficient in semi-classical and light music. He has performed at prestigious music and dance festivals across India, Bangladesh, Germany, and Belgium, including the Ananya Dance Festival, Gandhi Hindustani Sahitya Sabha, and Doordarshan.
Samarjit made his playback singing debut in a Maithili feature film and recorded a duet with Nancy for the Bangladeshi film Antaratma, starring Shakib Khan. His voice has also graced numerous Bangladeshi television dramas and Kolkata-based documentaries such as Mayer Chithi (on Ma Sarada Devi) and Hey Yugo Ishwor (on Ramakrishna), featuring legendary artists like Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty and Srikanta Acharjee.
With over a decade of teaching experience at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Samarjit has mentored hundreds of students, many of whom have made significant marks in the Indian music industry. He co-founded Surchhaya Sangeet Pathshala alongside the legendary Smt. Haimanti Sukla, aiming to promote classical music through online education. Currently, he conducts music courses for students worldwide, particularly from Bangladesh and India.
